Code-compliant valleys, step flashings, soakers, box gutters and dormers—formed and welded neatly with correct fixings and patination for long life and heritage match.
Good leadwork is quiet, watertight and almost invisible; bad leadwork stains, cracks and leaks. We survey the roof, choose the correct lead codes for each detail, and set out bays, laps and fixings so the metal can move without tearing. Flashings are chased and wedged properly, valleys fall to clear outlets, and every joint is shaped to shed water cleanly. We finish with patination oil and clear care notes. The result is traditional craft, executed to modern standards, that lasts for decades with minimal attention.
Before tools come out, we confirm exposures, falls, jointing options and the surrounding materials. From there we specify the right lead code for each location, the bay sizes that will tolerate thermal movement, and the clips/fixings that hold without over-restraining. Abutments, chimneys and parapets are checked for chase depth and sound masonry; timber substrates are assessed for flatness and ventilation. We document the plan with photos and simple notes so you know exactly what we’ll replace, retain or upgrade—and why.
Flashings, soakers, valleys and box gutters all demand different lead thicknesses. We size codes to the duty, keep bays within sensible dimensions and introduce steps or drips to control water and movement. This avoids the classic failures—oil-canning, fatigue splits and pulled fixings—while keeping the installation neat and proportionate to the roof.
Clips and fixings are set out to grip yet allow glide: stainless or copper clips at sensible centres, fixings positioned away from stress points, and expansion accounted for at laps and ends. Once dressed, we apply patination oil to both faces to prevent carbonate run-off staining tiles and brickwork and to keep the finish even as the lead weathers.
At abutments and chimneys, water management lives or dies on the detail. We rake chases clean, insert properly gauged flashings and wedge without over-packing; soakers are sized to the covering and stepped to the bond. Aprons land with generous cover and a clear drainage path. Everything is dressed tight, with corners and laps formed to the weather—not left to mastic.
Step flashings are cut to the course, wedged and pointed neatly so each step sheds onto the tile or slate below. Aprons are dressed flat, turned under at edges where appropriate and lapped correctly around corners. We keep joints crisp, with concealed fixings and tidy stop-ends to stop wind-driven rain getting behind the work.
Back trays catch and redirect heavy flows at the uphill face of a stack. We form trays with proper upstands, stop-ends and falls into the side gutters, then pair them with stepped soakers and side flashings that follow the bond. Where geometry demands, a secret gutter is introduced to carry water without crowding the covering.
Valleys and box gutters concentrate water and need discipline: straight substrates, positive falls, correct bay sizing and movement joints. We form neat drips so water can’t track back, secure linings without pinning them, and size outlets/overflows to suit catchment. The visual is simple—a clean trough with crisp edges—but the performance is robust, season after season.
Welts stiffen edges and help resist capillary action; drips break the film of water and control direction; expansion joints decouple bays so the metal can move with temperature swings. We set these features where they do the most good—changes of direction, long runs and perimeters—keeping the roof quiet and leak-free.
Outlets are formed with sumps to draw water down and reduce ponding, dressed into pipework or sumps with smooth throats. Where parapets or long runs risk overtopping in storms, we add discreet overflows or weirs. Strainers are included and accessible, because even the best gutter can’t fight a blanket of leaves without maintenance access.
Dormers bring junctions in every direction—cheeks, head, cill and side abutments. We build square, ventilated substrates, then clad or flash with rolled lead that reads straight and calm. Head flashings tuck under roof coverings, cheeks are seamed or panelled to suit the style, and cills kick water wide of the face. The assembly looks measured, sheds cleanly and lasts.
Where a traditional look is required, we lay out panels with even rolls, consistent centres and crisp arrises. Fixings are concealed; ventilation and slip layers are included behind so the cladding can move and dry. Joints align with window heads and sills for an architectural, intentional feel.
Lead to hips and ridges is formed with secure laps and mechanical restraint where wind exposure demands; cills are dressed with throated drips so dirty water doesn’t track back. All edges are finished cleanly and protected with patination oil, keeping staining off brick and render.
On period buildings we repair what can be saved and replace like-for-like where life has gone. Bossing and welding are used where each is appropriate; we avoid over-long bays and fixings that trap movement. Mortars are matched, chases are repointed sympathetically, and we document changes for conservation records. The aim: a discreet repair that looks original and performs better than before.
Bossing is used for smooth, work-hardened curves; welding for sound, permanent joints where shaping would overstress the sheet. We match existing roll centres, drip heights and patina where possible, blending new work into old so the eye reads one coherent roofscape.
Share a few photos of the area (wide shot plus close-ups of any splits or staining) and your postcode. We’ll assess the detail, recommend the right code and jointing, and send a clear, itemised quotation—with options for like-for-like repair or a full, warrantied replacement where that’s the smarter choice.
