Natural stone, porcelain or block paving laid to laser-set levels with correct falls, drainage and crisp cutting for a long-lasting terrace.
A patio should look sharp on day one and stay true for years. We handle everything from design and material choice to drainage, sub-base and neat finishing. Levels are agreed up front, falls are set with lasers, and edges are restrained so slabs don’t creep. We lay on full wet-beds (never dot-dab), bond backs correctly and joint with the right products for the stone. Thresholds, channels and recessed covers are planned in, then we leave the site clean and ready to enjoy. Many Liphook homeowners trust us for patios that combine precision installation with tidy, lasting results.
We’ll help you pick a scheme that suits the house and how you use the space—calm large-format porcelain, characterful natural stone, or robust block paving and setts. We agree slab sizes, patterns and borders, check colour batches, and plan step details and lighting before we break ground. Samples are shown in your light, and we talk through maintenance and slip resistance so the surface looks great and works safely in all weather.
Natural stone brings texture and variation. We select calibrated packs for consistent thickness, set them on full wet-beds and prime backs where required to improve adhesion. Edges are cut cleanly with water-cooled tools; joints are sized to suit the stone and pointed with a lime-free mortar or exterior resin. Sealing can enrich colour and reduce staining—we’ll advise what’s sensible for your stone and aspect. Our Liphook patios often feature sandstone and limestone for timeless appeal.
Porcelain is dense, accurate and low-porosity—great for crisp, modern terraces. Because it is vitrified, we always use an exterior slurry primer on the back and a compatible bond bridge to a full wet-bed. Cuts are wet-sawn for clean edges, expansion joints are respected, and we grout with flexible, stain-resistant products. Expect narrow, consistent joints and a surface that cleans with little effort.
For drives, paths and traditional patios, blocks and stone setts are tough and repairable. We install restrained borders, lay to pattern, and compact with the correct plates and mats so faces aren’t scuffed. For stone setts we typically use a rigid bed and mortar joints; for concrete blocks we use a laying course appropriate to the detail, with crisp cuts around covers and edges.
The finish is only as good as the base. We excavate to the right depth, stabilise with geotextile where needed, and compact Type 1 (or Type 3 for permeable builds) in thin, tested lifts. Levels and planes are formed in the sub-base so bedding stays thin and uniform, and we protect the formation from rain and trafficking. This is what prevents rocking slabs and settlement. In Liphook’s clay-heavy soils, proper sub-base prep is critical to long-term patio stability.
A well-graded Type 1 MOT gives dense, interlocking support. We separate it from the soil with geotextile where appropriate, place in controlled layers and compact with the correct plant. The result is a firm, even platform that won’t pump or rut.
Falls are set with lasers to channels, gullies or lawn—typically around 1:60–1:80—so water leaves the surface without pooling. We check door thresholds and DPC clearances and keep planes consistent across the terrace for easy furniture and drainage. On many Liphook patios we integrate discreet channels to manage rainwater effectively.
Edges are locked in before laying starts. Kerbs and soldier courses are haunched in concrete; step risers are built square with safe, even treads; and borders are planned to avoid tiny cuts. Proper restraint stops movement and keeps lines crisp.
We set true kerb lines, form picture-frame borders where desired and build steps with consistent riser heights and non-slip treads. Bullnose or mitred edges are finished neatly, and lighting conduits can be included for future step lights.
All slabs are laid on full wet-beds for 100% support. We keep joints straight, cuts tight and surface levels flush from stone to stone. Cutting is done with water-cooled saws; jointing follows once the bed has taken up, using grouts/mortars matched to the material and joint width for a clean, durable finish.
We prime slab backs (porcelain always, many stones by recommendation) with an SBR/slurry bond and bed onto a consistent mortar. No dot-and-dab. This ensures full support, strong adhesion and fewer callbacks.
Exterior grouts provide tidy, stain-resistant joints; traditional mortar pointing suits heritage stone. We control joint widths, compact properly and clean as we go to avoid hazing. Colours are sampled first so borders and fields read as one scheme.
Interfaces make or break a terrace. We set ACO channels at garage/front-door thresholds, trap gullies at downpipes, and convert manholes to recessed trays that blend into the paving. DPC clearances and step nosings are protected, and water is kept moving away from the house.
Channels are bedded solidly, set level with the paving and specified to the right load class. We maintain at least 150 mm from finished level to DPC on traditional details, or follow approved threshold systems where lower levels are required.
We leave you simple care notes tailored to your surface. Porcelain needs little more than an occasional wash; many stones benefit from an impregnating sealer. Keep joints weed-free, avoid rock salt on vulnerable materials, and use pH-appropriate cleaners so the patio stays sharp.
Share a few photos, rough sizes and the look you’re after (stone, porcelain or blocks). We’ll confirm build-up, drainage and details, bring samples to site, and provide a clear quotation with a realistic programme so you can enjoy a level, long-lasting terrace this season.
