Made-to-measure timber structures on proper footings with quality joinery, optional roofing and lighting, tied neatly into patios or decks.
A well-built gazebo or pergola turns an exposed corner into a comfortable outdoor room. We handle everything from early sketches and permissions to footings, structure and tidy integration with your patio or deck. Sizes are agreed to suit furniture and walkways, posts land where paving joints or joists can support them, and wiring for lights or heaters is planned before any timber is cut. Whether you want an airy pergola for climbing plants or a weather-capable gazebo with a proper roof, we build straight, rigid frames with crisp details that age gracefully and need minimal upkeep.
First we look at how you’ll use the space—dining, lounging or a hot tub—and where wind, sun and neighbours sit. That informs orientation, shade strategy and height. We sketch layouts that keep circulation clear and allow doors and paths to open freely, then agree post positions and roof lines that won’t clash with gutters or trees. If the scheme is large, close to a boundary or higher than permitted development allows, we’ll highlight planning considerations and propose proportionate tweaks so you can proceed confidently.
Comfortable dining usually needs around 3×3 m; lounging sets can want 3.5–4 m spans. Styles range from simple slatted pergolas to hipped-roof gazebos with fascia and soffit trims. Typical PD guidance limits height near boundaries and overall eaves/ridge heights; siting and drainage also matter. We’ll flag anything that might trigger an application and help adapt the design—setbacks, lower profiles or open sides—so the structure stays compliant while still delivering the look and function you want.
Footings keep the frame straight and stable for the long haul. We set posts on solid pads or into sleeves anchored to existing slabs, and where ground is tricky we use ground screws or deeper concrete bases. Levels are picked up from the surrounding terrace or deck so water sheds away and thresholds remain flush. All fixings are corrosion-resistant, and we isolate timber from standing water to extend service life.
Concrete pads provide reliable support and accurate set-out. Ground anchors or screws are ideal where digging is limited or roots/services must be protected. On existing slabs or decks, heavy-duty post shoes fix to structure beneath, not just paving, with chemical anchors into concrete or through-bolts into joists and beams. We plumb posts, lock them square and brace temporarily so the frame stays true as the build progresses.
Clean geometry and tight joints make the difference. We size posts and beams to span without bounce, use proper bearing at corners and mid-spans, and fix with concealed brackets or neat bolt details. Rafters are set out evenly for a measured rhythm, and notches are cut cleanly so everything seats flush. Stainless or galvanised hardware is standard; exposed cuts are sealed to resist weathering. The result is a rigid frame that looks intentional from every angle.
Posts are typically 125–150 mm sections for presence and stiffness; beams are sized to span with minimal deflection. Rafters are set to consistent centres, aligned with paving joints where possible for visual calm. We use structural screws/bolts, concealed angles or traditional mortice and tenon where the design suits, and we hide fixings where practical. Bracing is integrated subtly to resist racking without cluttering sightlines.
Your climate and use case dictate the top. Pergolas can stay open for climbing plants or take slats/louvres for controllable shade. Gazebos add real weather protection with solid decks, membranes and neat flashings at the house. We’ll balance daylight, ventilation and maintenance so the space stays comfortable through the seasons.
A tiled or felt-shingle roof offers a traditional look and strong weathering; we detail ventilation and drips to keep timber dry. Polycarbonate or glass gives light and shelter with minimal weight. Manual or motorised louvres provide adjustable shade and rain protection when specified with gutters. Fabric canopies are cost-effective and great for seasonal shade; we specify durable textiles and tensioning so they don’t flap or pond.
We plan services before the timber goes up. Conduits run inside posts for discreet cabling; lighting sits where it washes tables and paths without glare. Heaters, sockets and speakers are positioned sensibly and isolated from weather. The structure ties into decks or patios with flashed interfaces, picture-frame borders and step details that feel like one considered build, not an add-on.
On decks we bolt through beams/joists with plates, spreader washers and damp-proof breaks; on patios we set shoes into concrete pads beneath the paving and finish with neat collars so water can drain. Cabling routes are drilled and sleeved before cladding or trims go on, with junction points accessible for maintenance. We leave clear labelling and a simple circuit plan for your electrician’s certification.
We use class-appropriate treated timber or durable species and protect cut ends during installation. Finishes include clear oils for a natural look, stains for UV stability or painted systems for a crisp, architectural feel. Metalwork is galvanised or stainless to avoid staining, and we advise a simple maintenance cycle so the structure keeps its good looks with minimal effort. Where water drips concentrate, we add discreet drips and caps to keep staining off posts and paving.
Share a photo of the area and rough sizes, plus how you’d like to use the space. We’ll suggest layouts, footing options and finishes, then provide drawings and a clear, itemised quotation with programme. When you’re ready, we’ll build a straight, durable structure that feels like it was always part of your garden.
