Retaining Walls — Design Inputs, Footings & Drainage

Retaining walls must do two jobs at once: look good and quietly resist soil pressure for years. We start by understanding your site—ground type, levels, water, loads and what the wall needs to support—then propose a build that balances structure, drainage and finish. Whether it’s a crisp concrete/block wall ready for cladding or a warmer sleeper or gabion scheme, we detail footings, back-of-wall drainage and safe construction sequences. Levels and access are planned so the area remains usable during works, and we coordinate with engineers and Building Control where required for a smooth sign-off.

Site Assessment & Design Inputs

A sound design begins with the site. We survey levels, note nearby foundations, trees and boundaries, and check how surface water currently moves. Load paths—slopes above, traffic, decks or fences—inform the wall type and thickness, while setbacks and batter angles are chosen to reduce pressure and improve stability. Where required we take advice from your engineer and work to their details. Early planning avoids over-digging, helps us schedule concrete and deliveries efficiently, and ensures the finished wall ties neatly into paving, steps and planting without awkward height changes or trip points.

Soil Type, Loads & Set-back

Clay, sand, gravel and made ground behave differently under load and when wet. We consider their friction and cohesion, the retained height, surcharge from vehicles or structures, and the space available for the wall footprint. A modest set-back (or a slight batter) can dramatically improve stability, while stepped terraces reduce wall height and visual bulk. Where ground is variable, we may widen footings or switch to a reinforced solution. This practical approach keeps the design proportionate: just enough wall to be safe and durable, without wasting space or money.

Drainage, Geogrid & Tie-backs

Water behind a wall creates pressure and damage, so drainage is non-negotiable. We specify perforated pipe at the heel, free-draining backfill and geotextile separation to stop fines clogging the system. On reinforced earth or high walls, geogrid layers interlock with the backfill to extend the “gravity” of the wall deep into the slope. Tie-backs or deadmen can be introduced where anchorage is viable. These elements are set out to drawings with correct overlaps and embedment lengths, ensuring the wall resists movement through seasons of wet and dry.

Wall Types

We build in the material that suits your load, look and budget. Reinforced concrete and blockwork offer slim profiles ready for render or cladding, ideal where space is tight or a crisp finish is desired. Timber sleeper walls give a natural, cost-effective look and install quickly, while gabions provide excellent drainage and a rugged, architectural character. Each system has details that matter—footing size, fixings, weep points, coping—and we execute them carefully so the wall works structurally and looks measured from every angle.

Reinforced Concrete & Blockwork

RC and block walls provide robust, long-life solutions, especially at higher retained heights or where space is limited. We form straight, square footings, install rebar cages to schedule and pour cleanly with proper cover. Hollow blocks can be filled and tied to footings for composite strength. Movement joints, waterproofing membranes and weep holes are incorporated as specified, and the faces are made ready for render, stone or brick slips. Copings or drip-edged caps protect the top, and neat returns at steps and corners make the elevation feel deliberate, not pieced together.

Timber Sleepers & Gabions

For softer landscaping or informal terraces, sleepers and gabions shine. We set treated hardwood/softwood sleepers on concrete pads or strip footings, anchor them with rebar or ground screws, and stagger joints for strength. Facings are kept true, and caps or trims finish the top neatly. Gabions (stone-filled baskets) are self-draining and ideal where bulk and texture complement the garden; we assemble with bracing ties to prevent bulge, line with geotextile where required and pack stone tightly for a flat face. Both options integrate well with planting and steps.

Foundations & Footings

Footings spread load and resist overturning. We set out to drawings with lasers, excavate to firm strata and form clean, level bases. For concrete/block walls, footings are typically wider than the wall with reinforcement as specified; for sleepers, we use pads or continuous strips plus anchors to resist rotation. Steps in footings follow the slope to limit dig depth and waste. Getting this right ensures the wall stays put, doors and paving meet neatly, and future movement is avoided.

Strip, Pads & Mass Concrete

Strip footings suit continuous walls; pads support posts or sleeper anchors; mass concrete bases work well for shorter walls or where reinforcement isn’t required. We pour with correct slump, vibrate or tamp for density, and protect early-age concrete from frost and rapid drying. Starter bars, anchor bolts and drain sleeves are set accurately before the concrete goes off. This disciplined base makes the next stage faster and guarantees clean, level lines for block, shutter or sleeper work.

Drainage & Backfill

Behind every retaining wall is a managed drainage zone. We install perforated pipe to fall, wrap free-draining stone in geotextile to stop fines migrating, and separate soils so the system keeps working. Backfill is placed in lifts and compacted away from the wall to avoid pushing it over. Weep holes are set out at consistent centres and heights, with neat faces that don’t stain the finish. These simple steps protect the structure and the finish, keeping walls dry, clean and straight.

Weep Holes, Perforated Drains & Geotextiles

Weep holes relieve pressure at the face—spaced and sized to the design—and finished with tidy surrounds. The main perforated drain sits at the base with accessible endpoints for maintenance, wrapped in graded stone. Geotextiles separate soil from drainage stone and prevent clogging over time. At interfaces (steps, returns, corners) we keep continuity so water has a clear path out. Good drainage details are invisible when done right, but they’re the reason walls last.

Finishes & Copings

Finish is what you see every day. We prepare true faces for render or cladding, install durable copings with drips to shed water, and set handrails or edge protection where drops demand it. Adjacent paving, steps and planting are tied in so there are no awkward gaps, and colours and textures are chosen to sit comfortably with the house and garden. The wall reads as part of a complete landscape, not an afterthought.

Render, Cladding & Edge Protection

Rendered finishes give a clean, contemporary look; we use mesh and appropriate base coats over prepared substrates to resist cracking. Cladding—stone, brick slips or timber—adds depth and texture; we detail fixings and ventilation so moisture can escape. Copings are bedded with falls and drip details, and edge protection (railings or planting barriers) is positioned to be safe without stealing the view. Every junction is considered so maintenance stays low and the finish weathers gracefully.
