Manholes & Inspection Chambers — Levels, Benching & Testing
Manholes and inspection chambers keep drainage accessible, inspectable and compliant. We set them out to the design levels, construct chambers in the right material for depth and loading, and form smooth benching that guides flows to the outlet without ponding. Connections are made cleanly with correct pipe bedding, and covers are chosen to suit traffic class and finish level—whether they sit in paving, tarmac or lawns. Throughout, we coordinate with existing drains, protect nearby services and keep a tidy site. Levels & Setting Out
Accurate levels are critical for free-flowing drainage and trouble-free paving. We establish a fixed datum, confirm inlet and outlet positions, and check surrounding gradients so the chamber top lands at the right height and the cover sits flush. Lines are squared to the run so channels are straight and benching presents neatly to the outlet. We also consider finished surfaces and falls around the frame to prevent standing water. Clear set-out avoids late height changes, keeps lids level with paths and driveways, and ensures later trades can finish cleanly around the chamber without rocking or weak mortar shoulders.
Inverts, Falls & Alignments
We take invert levels from the lowest downstream control and work upstream, maintaining the designed falls so pipes self-clean without excessive velocity. Channels through the chamber are aligned to minimise turbulence and head loss; junctions are swept and set at sensible entry angles. Where depth changes, we step the line cleanly and retain cover to meet specification. All inverts are checked with laser or staff before benching, recorded in a simple schedule and photographed for the file. This discipline keeps the system free-draining, reduces silt build-up and makes future CCTV or jetting efficient.
Chamber Types
Different depths and loadings suit different chamber systems. For most domestic runs we install PPIC (preformed plastic inspection chambers) with modular risers for speed, reliability and watertight joints. At greater depths, for larger diameters or where bespoke benching is required, we switch to brick or concrete ring construction with concrete bases to detail. We select components that tolerate local ground conditions and traffic, and we combine systems where sensible—for example a plastic base under concrete rings with a heavy-duty cover. The goal is a durable, inspectable chamber that fits the site and lasts.
PPIC, Brickwork & Concrete Rings
PPIC bases provide moulded channels and socketed entries that speed installation and reduce leakage risk. Risers stack to height and can be cut for precise top levels before frames are set in mortar. Brick chambers allow tailored benching, staggered inlets and odd alignments; we lay in strong mixes with clean joints and properly radius the channels. Concrete rings suit deeper shafts and higher load classes; we place on level beds, joint and seal carefully, and step irons can be fitted where specified. Whichever build we use, backfill is placed and compacted evenly to protect the structure.
Connections & Junctions
Neat, stress-free connections reduce future defects. We make entries with correct couplers, adaptors or saddles and bed incoming pipes on granular material to manufacturer guidance. Junction angles are chosen for smooth flow and ease of rodding. Where lines approach at shallow cover we protect with concrete slabs or ducts; where they pass through walls we use sleeves to allow settlement without shear. Rocker pipes are installed at manhole interfaces to absorb movement. Every joint is aligned, supported and tested before backfill so the system performs as designed.
Saddles, Rocker Pipes & Benching
Saddles are core-drilled and fitted to existing runs with sealants approved for the pipe material, providing watertight, low-profile entries. Short “rocker” pipes (typically 500–600 mm) are laid either side of chamber walls to accommodate differential settlement and protect joints from bending. Benching is formed in strong mortar or concrete, trowelled to a smooth finish with a fall of around 1:10 to the channel, and radiused so rodding equipment passes easily. This trio—sound entry, movement control and smooth benching—prevents leaks, snags and silt traps.
Covers, Frames & Surrounds
Lids must match use and finish. We specify load classes (A15 garden, B125 footpath, C250 kerbside, D400 carriageway) to suit location, and select recessed trays where you want paving or resin to continue over the cover. Frames are bedded on full mortar, not dabs, set level and square to surrounding lines, and haunched or surrounded to the paving detail. We maintain neat joints, correct bond cuts and firm bedding right up to the frame so no rocking develops. Seal options are chosen to deter smells and ingress where required without compromising access.
Load Ratings, Sealing & Recessed Lids
Choosing the right cover prevents dangerous failures and unsightly dips. We match the frame and lid to the expected traffic and finish height, and we use locking or sealed variants near sensitive areas. Recessed trays are built with the same bedding layer as the surrounding surface, allowing a continuous look; we manage weight by sensible fill depths and lifting points. All edges are supported and drip lines considered so water doesn’t sit around the frame. The result is a cover that’s safe, quiet underfoot and visually discreet.
Testing & Commissioning
Before handover we prove the system. Where specified, we air- or water-test new runs between chambers, confirm watertight joints and check that flows travel as intended. We run water through gullies and channels to verify benching and outlet performance, and we check covers for stability and level. As-built levels and photos are collated with product data and test records. Commissioning isn’t just paperwork—it’s assurance that the installation is tight, accessible and ready for years of service with minimal maintenance.
Air/Water Tests & CCTV Surveys
Air tests quickly identify joint issues on new pipework; water tests confirm integrity over longer lengths or where adoption is planned. For tie-ins to older drains or where routes are unclear, we commission CCTV to map lines, verify gradients and provide a baseline condition report. Any minor snags are corrected immediately and retested. Copies of test sheets, CCTV stills and a simple plan go into your record pack, streamlining approvals and future maintenance.
