A flat, durable slab starts with disciplined preparation. We set out to drawings, confirm levels and falls, install membranes and insulation correctly, place reinforcement to the right cover, then pour and finish the concrete in a controlled sequence. Whether you need a tampered external slab for paving or a power-floated internal oversite ready for screed or resin, we build to the specification and leave clean, accurate edges for the next trade. Services, starters and movement joints are positioned where they belong, and curing/protection is planned before the concrete arrives. The result is a strong, true surface that passes inspection and lets follow-on works begin without delay.
Good slabs are built, not guessed. We establish a fixed datum, strike control lines and check site constraints so finished floor levels marry with thresholds, drains and adjoining rooms. Rails and pins are set to the required planes and falls, then re-checked as the work progresses. Where slabs step, we mark heights clearly to avoid over-pour or thin sections. Edges are measured to suit formwork thickness and insulation upstands, with allowances for screed build-ups where applicable. This upfront accuracy prevents chasing levels later and delivers a slab that reads flat and consistent under a straightedge.
We run lasers to set a reliable datum and install screed rails or guide pins at calculated heights so the strike can follow a true plane. External slabs are given sensible falls to channels or gullies; internal oversites are built level or to engineered falls as specified. Rails are fixed so they won’t move during vibration, and we keep a clean “lane” sequence so finishing crews can work efficiently. Before concrete, we sign off rails and falls with you or the designer, ensuring everyone agrees the levels that will be cast.
Formwork defines the slab and protects interfaces. We use straight, square shutters braced to resist pour pressure, with tight joints to prevent grout loss. Isolation foam or slip membranes are installed where the slab meets walls, columns or different structures, reducing unwanted restraint and future cracking. Service boxes, pipe sleeves and recesses are formed neatly and pinned so they don’t drift. At door thresholds and steps we build crisp arrises and leave robust edges that survive follow-on trades.
Moisture control and thermal performance are set at this stage. We lay damp-proof membranes at the correct position in the build-up, turn them up at perimeters to form a tray, and tape laps to maintain continuity. Insulation is cut tight with staggered joints, installed at the specified thickness and grade, and protected from foot traffic. Where radon or gas barriers are required, we follow the detail and ensure service penetrations are sealed with compatible fittings. Perimeter upstands and thermal breaks are included so the envelope remains continuous when walls and screeds go in.
Membrane laps are kept clean and dry, overlapped to manufacturer guidance and fully taped; corners are folded rather than cut wherever possible. Pipes and ducts pass through pre-formed collars or sealed sleeves so the barrier remains intact. At penetrations we allow for movement and future access, marking positions on the as-built for easy reference. Before the pour, we walk the area and repair any scuffs or punctures so the DPM does its job for the life of the slab.
Rebar controls cracking and carries loads; it only works when it’s in the right place. We set mesh on chairs to achieve specified cover, tie laps to schedule and keep steel off membranes and formwork with proper spacers. At re-entrant corners and openings we add local bars to reduce shrinkage cracks, and at thickened edges or beams we build cages to detail. Starter bars, hold-downs and dowels are positioned using templates so the superstructure lands exactly where the designer intends.
Typical slabs use A193 or A252 mesh; we lay sheets with correct lap lengths, stagger joints and secure them so they don’t rise or sink during vibration. Plastic or steel chairs set the mesh at the designed height, and edge spacers maintain side cover without printing through. We keep steel clean and free of mud, maintain walk-boards to prevent damage, and check cover with a depth gauge before and during the pour. Photos are taken for the record prior to concrete.
Where slabs act as rafts or carry point loads, we form thickenings and beams to the schedule and tie cages so they remain rigid during placement. Starters and dowels are set from templates aligned to wall centres or baseplate positions, with thread protection and clear protrusion lengths. Isolation and sleeves are included where services cross beams, avoiding later cores. Getting these details right speeds the superstructure and avoids costly alterations.
Concrete is scheduled to the correct strength and workability for access and finish. We place in a planned sequence, vibrate or rod to remove air without displacing steel, and strike to rails for a flat plane. External slabs are tamped or brush-finished for grip; internal oversites are bull-floated and, where specified, power-floated to the required finish class. We check flatness as we go and correct while the concrete is live, not the day after.
Poker vibrators are used methodically—short, overlapping insertions—so honeycombing is eliminated but segregation is avoided. Tamped finishes give durable traction outdoors and provide a good key for bedding. For internal floors, we time the power-float passes with the set: pan to consolidate, blades to close and finish, achieving the specified tolerance. Edges and penetrations are re-worked by hand to keep lines sharp.
Curing begins immediately. We apply curing membranes, cover with sheets or maintain moisture so early-age drying doesn’t rob strength. Saw cuts or formed joints are installed at planned centres and stress points to control shrinkage cracking, and perimeters are protected from knocks and early loading. Access is managed so following trades don’t mark the surface or bridge joints before the concrete is ready. You’ll know when light foot traffic and heavier loads are acceptable.
Isolation, contraction and expansion joints are set to the layout and continued through finishes where required. We seal joints with suitable products after initial movement to keep debris and water out. In heat, wind or frost we adjust curing and protection to suit, guarding against curling, crazing or freeze damage. Clear signage keeps trolleys and pallets off too soon, preserving flatness and edge quality for the long term.
