Timber & Laminate Floor Installation

A good floor should look beautiful, feel solid underfoot and stay quiet for years. We install engineered, solid wood and laminate floors with the same focus on accuracy and tidy workmanship. Every project starts with a proper survey of levels, moisture and thresholds so the layout flows neatly from room to room. We agree plank direction, trims and door clearances up front, then prepare subfloors so boards sit flat and stay that way. On site we protect adjacent areas, cut cleanly and leave sharp lines at skirtings and stairs. The result is a durable, comfortable floor that complements the rest of your home.

Floor Types

Different rooms and lifestyles call for different boards. Engineered wood balances real-timber warmth with excellent stability, making it ideal across larger spaces or over underfloor heating. Solid wood offers timeless character where conditions are right and you want generous sanding life. Quality laminate gives a tough, easy-care finish for family rooms, rentals and high-traffic areas, with realistic textures and colours. Pattern choices—from wide planks to herringbone or chevron—change the feel of a space, so we’ll show samples in your light and discuss how joints, thresholds and stair edges will read as a coherent whole.

Engineered & Solid Wood

Engineered boards are built for stability: a hardwood wear layer over a cross-laminated core that resists seasonal movement and works well with underfloor heating. They deliver the look and feel of timber with fewer expansion issues across open plans. Solid wood is a premium, traditional option with generous sanding life and rich grain that develops patina over time. It demands tighter humidity control and careful detailing around radiators, kitchens and south-facing glazing. We help you choose species, grade and plank size, then set out expansion, acclimatisation and finishing so the floor performs as beautifully as it looks.

Laminate & Herringbone

Modern laminate pairs tough, scratch-resistant surfaces with convincing wood textures—great for busy households, pets and rental properties. It’s quick to fit, easy to maintain and cost-effective for large areas. Herringbone (wood or laminate) adds a crafted, architectural feel, drawing the eye and making smaller rooms feel considered. Because pattern magnifies inaccuracies, we strike accurate starting lines, square to key sightlines such as hallways and fireplaces, and use matching trims for tidy borders. We’ll advise where pattern works best, how to handle doorways and transitions, and which underlays keep the floor quiet and comfortable.

Subfloor Preparation

Lasting floors start with a stable, level base. We check moisture in concrete and timber, confirm flatness against manufacturer tolerances and identify dips, crowns or loose areas that would telegraph through the finish. Preparation may include mechanical fixing of boards, ply-overlay, moisture barriers or self-levelling to achieve a flat, secure surface. We also allow for door trimming, radiator pipe clearances and threshold heights so transitions are safe and discreet. Good prep reduces creaks, gaps and premature wear, and it’s the step that separates a floor that simply looks new from one that stays quiet and true for years.

Levelling & Moisture Checks

We test concrete slabs and screeds with calibrated meters and follow manufacturer limits for relative humidity. Where levels are out, we use fibre-reinforced or smoothing compounds to bring floors within tolerance, feathering to edges for invisible transitions. Timber subfloors are re-fixed, packed and planed where required; loose or damaged boards are replaced. In wet areas and on recently poured slabs we consider vapour barriers or epoxy DPMs to control moisture migration. These checks protect against cupping, peaking and joint movement, ensuring your warranty remains valid and your floor remains quiet, stable and attractive.

Underlay — Acoustic & Thermal

The right underlay makes floors feel better and last longer. Acoustic foams reduce impact sound between storeys; higher-density options prevent bounce under click systems. Where moisture is present we specify integrated vapour barriers, and for ground floors we consider thermal resistance so underfloor heating remains efficient. On uneven substrates, combination underlays with minor levelling capability help, but we never use them as a substitute for proper prep. We’ll match underlay to board type, subfloor and room use, balancing sound reduction, comfort, thermal performance and budget to deliver the best overall result.

Installation Methods

Method depends on board type, subfloor and room size. Click-system laminates and some engineered boards suit floating installations over the correct underlay, giving speed and acoustic benefits. Glue-down is ideal for herringbone, large spans or heavy traffic, providing a solid, refined feel and excellent sound characteristics. Secret-nailing works well on timber substrates with suitable tongue strength. We set movement gaps correctly, brace long runs and align joints to features and light fall. Every cut and trim is planned so doors, stairs and thresholds present cleanly and the floor reads as a single, considered surface.

Glue-down, Floating & Secret-nail

Glue-down bonds boards directly to concrete or plywood using flexible adhesives that control movement and reduce hollow sound—especially good for parquet patterns. Floating relies on precise machining and quality underlay to feel quiet and solid; joints are locked accurately and perimeter gaps detailed with care. Secret-nailing fixes through the tongue into timber below, delivering a traditional, robust build that still accommodates seasonal movement. We’ll explain pros and cons for your space, including repairability, acoustics and cost, then select the method that gives the best feel underfoot and long-term stability.

Details & Finishes

Small decisions make a big visual difference. We agree plank direction to suit light and circulation, choose thresholds that meet adjoining floors cleanly, and finish perimeters with skirting re-fit or neat scotia for a minimal shadow line. Around pipes and door frames we undercut and scribe for tight, consistent gaps. For timber, we specify durable oils or lacquers based on traffic, sheen preference and maintenance routine. We also provide colour-matched fillers and touch-up advice so the floor keeps its sharp look through everyday life.

Thresholds, Trims & Scotia

Transitions should be safe, subtle and durable. We use low-profile bars where heights align, ramps where they don’t, and colour-matched trims that disappear into the scheme. At perimeters we either remove and refit skirting for the cleanest line, or install slim scotia with tight mitres and consistent reveals. Door plates are centred, screwed through slots to allow movement and set flush to avoid toe-stubs. Around pipe penetrations we fit neat collars or scribed infills so expansion gaps stay functional but unobtrusive. The aim is a calm perimeter that frames the floor without drawing attention.

Oil, Lacquer or Hardwax

Oiled finishes highlight grain and are easy to refresh locally; they suit living spaces where a natural, low-sheen look is preferred. Lacquers provide tougher surface protection and simpler day-to-day cleaning—good for hallways, kitchens and households with pets. Hardwax oils bridge the gap, combining warmth with improved resistance. We’ll talk through sheen levels, slip resistance and colour effects (tints, stains, reactive finishes), then sample on your chosen boards in your light. Whatever you pick, we’ll supply maintenance guidance and compatible products so performance and appearance stay consistent.

Care & Maintenance

A little routine care keeps floors looking new. We recommend entrance mats to trap grit, felt pads under chairs and regular vacuuming with a soft head. Spills should be wiped promptly; standing water and steam mops are avoided. Keep indoor humidity in a comfortable range to minimise movement. We provide cleaning guidance matched to your finish and can revisit for periodic care—re-oil top-ups or light abrade-and-re-coat for lacquer where appropriate. With sensible upkeep, your floor will stay flat, quiet and attractive for many years.

Cleaning & Aftercare

Use pH-neutral cleaners designed for your finish: soap-based products for oiled floors, approved spray cleaners for lacquer. Avoid bleach, ammonia and silicone polishes that leave residues. For scuffs, a gentle white pad usually lifts marks on lacquer; oiled floors respond well to local re-oiling after a light de-gloss. Protect sunny areas with blinds or rugs to reduce UV fading, and rotate mats and furniture occasionally to even wear. If damage occurs, we’ll advise on spot repairs or board replacement so the fix blends invisibly with the surrounding floor.
