Skirting & Architraves — Profile, Fit & Finish

Well-fitted skirting and architraves frame every room, hide expansion gaps and protect walls from daily knocks. We plan the look, scale and junctions so profiles complement your doors, floors and period features. That starts with a careful survey: checking wall bow, floor levels, plaster thickness and door set-outs so joints land where they should. We then agree profiles, heights and mitre lines before any cuts are made. On site we protect floors, work cleanly and keep lines straight and consistent. The result is crisp mouldings, tight edges and smooth transitions that make the whole space feel tidier, more finished and easier to decorate.

Profiles & Period Details

Profile choice sets the character. In period homes we often match existing lines, adjusting heights to suit new floor finishes or radiators. In modern schemes, simpler profiles create calm, contemporary edges. We’ll show samples in your light and discuss how the moulding interacts with shadow lines, window boards and door styles. Corner strategies are agreed up front—mitred, returned or square—and we review tricky points like chimney breasts, alcoves and staircase strings so everything flows. If you’re mixing old and new, we’ll blend profiles sensitively and use proportion to keep rooms coherent, not busy.

Torus, Ogee, Chamfered, Victorian

Torus is a classic, rounded top that suits most homes and hides minor paint lines well. Ogee gives a deeper, elegant curve with more shadow for traditional rooms. Chamfered profiles are clean and minimal—great for contemporary spaces and easy to dust. Victorian styles introduce stepped or multi-radius details for period accuracy, often at taller heights. We’ll balance height with ceiling line and radiator placement, and can add plinth blocks or rosettes at door sets where appropriate. Whatever you choose, we cut cleanly, keep the profile intact round corners and protect delicate edges through decorating.

Preparation for Straight Lines

Preparation decides how sharp the final result will look. We check floor flatness, wall plumb and bow, then plan where to scribe, pack or plane to achieve straight, consistent lines. Radiator tails, sockets and door thresholds are considered so skirting lands neatly without awkward notches. On wavy walls we decide which plane to follow—floor or wall—so sightlines remain calm. We also isolate moisture risks on fresh plaster or new concrete and confirm paint sequences with your decorator. Good prep means fewer filler lines and faster, cleaner finishing later.

Packing Out & Levelling

Where walls run out or plaster is thick at reveals, we use packers and laser levels to bring the face true before fixing. Skirting is set dead level and straight, with discreet shims behind so the front reads as one plane. Door linings are checked and adjusted so architraves sit flat without rocking, and shadow gaps are kept consistent. We pre-drill or pin-fix as needed for the substrate, then pull everything tight for a solid feel. This groundwork lets mitres close perfectly and keeps caulk lines fine and reliable.

Installation Craft

Clean joints are the hallmark of good mouldings. We set out so mitres don’t fall on awkward lumps in the plaster, and we choose joint types to suit the run: external mitres back-cut for tight noses, internals scribed so gaps don’t open with movement. Architraves are centred to door linings, head pieces sit level, and returns are finished, not left blunt. Fixings are placed to avoid telegraphing through delicate profiles. Throughout, we protect adjacent finishes and vacuum as we go so the room stays usable and tidy.

Crisp Mitres & Clean Returns

External corners are mitred and subtly back-cut to close tightly under paint. We align grain and keep the profile flowing around the corner, then pin, glue and fill with care so the joint disappears. Where skirting ends into open space, we form neat return mitres rather than square sawn ends, protecting edges and making the profile look intentional. At tiny nibs or stepped walls, we template and pre-assemble tricky sections for a perfect fit. The aim is simple: sharp noses, no gaps and edges that stay closed over time.

Scribed Joints to Uneven Walls

Internal corners are scribed rather than mitred so movement doesn’t open a gap. We cut the profile accurately, undercutting the back of the nose for a tight, shadow-free joint against wavy plaster. On bowed walls we use short scribes or break long runs with discreet joints to maintain a straight face. For tall skirtings we add hidden blocks or biscuits to keep faces flush. The result is a corner that reads as one piece, paints beautifully and remains tidy as the seasons change.

Finishing Ready for Paint

Great finishing starts with prepared timber and ends with minimal decorating effort. We select stable, paint-grade material or primed MDF where appropriate, then fix, fill and sand to a fine edge. Gaps to walls and floors are caulked sparingly for a smooth paint line; nail heads and mitres are filled and sanded flush. If you’re staining or varnishing, we adjust fixings and fillers accordingly. We’ll coordinate with your decorator on primer choice, sheen level and drying times so your mouldings dry hard, clean and evenly, ready for final coats.

Filling & Caulking for Sharp Edges

We keep filler to a minimum by cutting accurately first. Nail holes are filled with a compatible, sandable product; mitres get a fine skim only. Caulk is applied as a tiny bead and tooled once to avoid ridges—especially important on chamfered and ogee noses that reveal messy lines. After a light de-nib, edges feel seamless and paint lays flat without tiger stripes. Where timber meets tile or stone, we use decor sealants that flex with movement and colour-match for a discrete, durable joint.

Matching & Continuity

Continuity across rooms makes a home feel composed. We match profile depths so skirting aligns through doorways, step changes are handled with neat ramps, and architrave heads line through at a consistent height. When replacing in stages, we source near-identical profiles or machine to match, then blend transitions with plinth blocks or subtle beads where exact matches no longer exist. Flooring interfaces are planned so expansion gaps are hidden and door thresholds sit centred and flush. The goal is a calm, continuous line that ties the whole house together.

Match Existing or Whole-house Refresh

If you love the existing style, we’ll replicate it, adjusting only where floors or walls have changed. When a fresh start is best, we help choose a new profile that suits your architecture and future decorating plans, then roll it through the house in logical phases. We can upsize modest skirting to rebalance tall ceilings, or simplify busy rooms with cleaner lines. Either approach delivers tidy, consistent detailing—and because we plan sequencing and access carefully, the work is done with minimal disruption to daily life.
